SCHOLARS PROGRAM APPLICATION

Program Eligibility:

  • Interested in primary care and community health.
  • Motivated to address health needs in vulnerable, underserved communities.
  • Enrolled in one of the eligible majors listed below.
  • Two Year Students must be in their last two years of the eligible major.
    • Ex. Medical students cannot join the AHEC Scholars program in their first two years of medical school. They will be eligible to participate in AHEC Scholars beginning in Year 3.

After using the Apply Today button, you will be redirected to the AHEC application. If you answer “no” to being enrolled in one of the listed academic programs, you are NOT eligible and the application will close out automatically. If you are a two-year applicant but are not in the last two years of your academic program, you are NOT eligible and the application will close out automatically.

One Year AHEC Scholars

  • Nursing (LVN)
  • Behavioral Health
  • Certified Nursing Assistant
  • Community Health Worker
  • Medical Assistant
  • Allied Health
    • Dental Assistants
    • Dental Hygienists
    • Medical Assistant
    • Pharmacy Assistant

Two Year AHEC Scholars

  • Dentistry
  • Medical Doctor (MD, DO)
  • Nursing (RN-ASN)
  • Psychology (Masters Level)
  • Public Health
  • Social Work
  • Physician’s Assistant

* Exception: 1-year medical assistant (MA) and community health worker (CHW) programs allowed.

Program Requirements:

  • Complete at least 80 hours (40 hours/year for 2 years) of online didactic education.
    * Exception: 1-year MA/CHW students complete at least 40 hours.
  • Complete at least 80 hours (40 hours/year for 2 years) of clinical, community-based training at an underserved site.
    * Exception: 1-year MA/CHW students complete at least 40 hours.
  • Complete a community-based health project with an underserved site and an AHEC center.
  • Complete evaluation and alumni surveys during and after graduating from the program.

Upon program completion, AHEC Scholars will be awarded a Certificate in Community Health from the CA Statewide AHEC endorsed by the California Primary Care Association and the Rural Health Association.
