The Mendocino AHEC is a new AHEC center currently funded by the state. It’s hosted by the Alliance for Rural Community Health (ARCH) whose mission is to develop and expand collaborative ways of addressing community health care issues in a cost-effective and efficient manner. At 11 clinic sites, ARCH members serve patients in Mendocino and Lake Counties. They provide services to over 37,000 residents, or approximately 43% of our populations. ARCH members provide primary health services including medical care, dental care and counseling/behavioral health services. Four of the health centers serve as the sole providers of care in their communities. Special problems encountered in this rural area include areas of low population density, isolation of communities by rugged geography, lack of adequate county-wide communications infrastructure and marginal support from county governments. The Mendocino AHEC activities include pipeline activities, rural rotations for health professions students/residents and continuing education for professionals practicing in rural CHCs
